Sam Mann ’07 was a driving force behind the turnaround of the W&J baseball program. A 2007 D3baseball.com and ABCA All-American, Mann both pitched and hit his way into nearly every statistical category in Presidents baseball history.
A four-time First Team All-Presidents’ Athletic Conference choice, Mann finished his career with a 26-14 record. Mann tossed 26 complete games and owned a 2.21 ERA in 293 2/3 innings. With only 26 career walks, Mann averaged 0.80 walks per nine innings, while striking out 250 batters.
During his senior year at the plate, the Presidents’ Athletic Conference and Mideast Region Player of the Year posted the nation’s 11th-best batting average (.463), while also leading the team and the league in hits (68). Mann ranked second in the conference in runs (45) and total bases (93). He batted .350 for his career (191-546) with 33 doubles, 17 home runs and 116 runs batted in. Mann also scored 128 runs.
Mann helped the Presidents claim three Presidents’ Athletic Conference championships and make three appearances in the ECAC Division III South Championship. The 2004 W&J squad was the first to capture a PAC baseball title since the 1997 Presidents. Washington & Jefferson held a 119-56 record with Mann as a member of the squad.
Mann twice earned CoSIDA Academic All-District laurels and became the school’s first baseball Academic All-American in 2007.
Following his career, Mann signed a professional baseball contract with the Kalamazoo (Mich.) Kings of the independent Frontier League, becoming the first President in modern history to earn a professional baseball contract.
After his baseball career came to an end, Mann attended law school at William & Mary, utilizing the NCAA postgraduate scholarship that he received in the spring of 2007. Mann is an attorney at Cahill Gordon & Reindel in New York City.
